ASSESSMENT OF ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION FROM CUPOLA FOUNDRIES

Client: Government of India

Financing agency: United Nations

Project summary: EDT visited Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu to assess the emissions from iron smelting cupolas. The project remit included the enhancement of the capabilities of SITARC Pump Institute (SPI) in assessing, measuring and controlling pollution emissions to air from small and medium sized cupola furnaces melting pig iron with coke to make iron castings for use by pumpset manufacturers around Coimbatore, South India. To produce a strategy document outlining the course of action required by the cupola industry to assess the design and operation of the cupolas, measure emissions to air using appropriate sampling and analytical techniques and adopt operational procedures and design modifications that reduce emissions to air.

BOILERHOUSE STAFF TRAINING

Client: Monsanto (Nutrasweet Kelco)

Financing agency: Monsanto

Project summary: As part of its boilerhouse services to Monsanto, EDT has run a number of boilerhouse training courses for Monsanto staff. This course includes the basics of combustion, steam raising, control, water treatment, boiler design, safety and boiler maintenance . The bespoke course is run in-house at Monsanto and includes both theory sessions and practical sessions in the boilerhouse. All participants are continually assessed by examination on each course topic through out the course.

MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT

Client: Ampleforth Abbey and College

Financing agency: Ampleforth Abbey and College, York

Project summary: EDT has undertaken a combined Mechanical, Electrical and Energy Management role at the College. The College is in an isolated location and therefore relies to a large extent on its own energy/water resources. Heat is provided through oil-fired central heating and, as part of their on-site improvement programme, EDT advised Ampleforth  on issues relating to energy and in particular on the type of heating system, boilers, radiators etc., to install to ensure maximum coverage and efficiency. EDT also negotiated the oil and electricity contracts with the suppliers and monitored consumption on a monthly basis.

AIR POLLUTION CONTROL TECHNOLOGY TRAINING

Client: British Sugar

Financing agency: British Sugar

Project summary: British Sugar run a variety of boiler plant and drier plant variously equipped with flue gas cleaning equipment to maintain compliance with UK emissions legislation. EDT has run courses to train and refresh staff's knowledge of gas cleaning technologies including particulates, SOx, NOx, and the principle technologies available to control them.

BARRIER FILTRATION STUDIES

Client: Npower

Financing agency:  Npower

Project summary: EDT undertook a major review of the state of the art relating to fabric filtration of coal derived flue gases for application to large boiler plant. The review included fabric filter types, outside/in filters, pulse-jet, inside/out filters, shake/deflate, reverse air including issues relating to design, fundamentals, applications, filter media. Operation and Maintenance Requirements, filter medium support, filter pressure drop, filter cleaning and ash handling were also discussed. Current status of technologies and recent developments in fabric, surface coatings, pleated/cageless bags, cartridges, ceramics, COHPAC and an economic evaluation, including capital costs of filter type, filter cleaning selection, filtration medium selection and operating costs was also included.

FABRIC FILTER ASSESSMENT AND REFURBISHMENT

Client: A major UK Chemical company

Financing agency:

Project summary: EDT were invited to undertake an inspection and assessment of the fabric filter serving a 34MW Foster Wheeler Multi Solids Fluidised Bed Combustor (MSFBC) coal-fired boiler plant. The filter was manufactured by Peabody Sturtevant and was installed in 1987 as part of the boiler contract with Foster W heeler but has been operated only on a continuous basis for the last two years. On bringing the filter back on-line, it was clear that the filter was not performing properly and had probably experienced many hours of operation outside its design envelope during the prolonged boiler commissioning period prompted an assessment of the filter plant. EDT carried out a full inspection of the filter plant and ancillaries, recommended design and operational modifications, specified an new cleaning controller and procured and supplied a new set of cages and filter bags.

SPS GAS CLEANING MANUAL, VOLUME XI: GAS PURIFICATION, PART 4

Client: AEA Technology

Financing agency: AEA Technology

Project summary: A significant part of industrial activity that produces NOx and SOx involves thermal oxidation processes, typically combustion, of fossil fuels particularly coal and oil. Oxides of sulphur and nitrogen are air pollutants that readily hydrolyse in the atmosphere to produce sulphur and nitrogen based acids. Most of the acid attack on plant life and buildings is attributed to the condensation of these acidic species. There is therefore a desire to minimise their escape to atmosphere during combustion or processing. Outlined in this section of the manual are techniques and methods by which they can be reduced. EDT were engaged to produce a report to form part of SPS's Gas Cleaning Manual to give detailed descriptions of processes and equipment which can be applied to minimise the emissions to atmosphere of nitrogen and sulphur oxides. The latest technologies were reviewed giving details of process layout, efficiencies achievable, waste and by-product streams, energy consumption, operability and operating experience.

FLUE GAS CLEANING

Client: Filtration Society

Financing agency: Filtration Society

Project summary: EDT organised and chaired a conference for The Filtration Society at Cheltenham's Golden Valley Thistle hotel on Tuesday 15 April 1997 entitled "Flue Gas Cleaning on Combustion Plant". The conference attracted 60 delegates from the UK, Ireland, Austria, Denmark, Holland and Belgium. Six technical papers were presented covering the fundamental chemistry of combustion and gas cleaning, and the selection and design of equipment required to burn fuels and wastes with minimum effect on the environment.
